To all graduating students and those in the job market: I've seen a few things that have led me to put in my two cents:
1) When going to a career fair, do some research on your top companies first. It will impress companies if you know about them and know what departments and projects interests you. Sound ENTHUSIASTIC! Tell the recruiter you are the best candidate and how much you love the company. Cockiness is good here. 2) On your resume, use one consistent font and limit font sizes. This isn't Arts & Crafts. The recruiters don't care how many different fancy fonts and font colors you can select in Microsoft Word. We know that all the fonts are fascinating, and you want to use a combination of Ariel, Times New Roman, Calibra, and Old Sans Serif...but please resist this temptation! 3) If you are just coming out of school or are early in your career, 2 page resumes MAX! 1 page is better. Recruiters get thousands of resumes andwant to be able to look at yours quickly and see you are a good candidate. 4) If you have won any prestigious award, MENTION IT! I had a certain friend who was a NASA Scholar who didn't list it on his resume. Come on now. lol. 5) Career fairs where they host interviews on the spot work MUCH better than just sending in your resume in online. You can't beat face-to-face time with a recruiter. Online submission just sends your resume to a database with millions of others, and the lazy bitter lady in HR does not feel like looking thoroughly at each resume. 6) WEAR A FULL BUSINESS SUIT! For men and women, dress conservatively. This means no fancy Steve Harvey suits that you would wear to church on Easter Sunday. You don't want anything that will distract the recruiter. Fellas, a nice dark suit, solid color, and a solid plain dress shirt (white or light blue is good), and a tie, with nicely polished dress shoes. No bling. This isn't a hip-hop club, there is a time and place to floss your silver and diamonds, but there is no need to try to blind the interviewer. Ladies, a conservative business dress, minimum make-up and jewlery. You also don't want to distract anyone. so cover those thighs and cleavage.
